In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner, aged 27, partnered with Joseph Peffer to open a cobblery in Milwaukee catering to "Jobbing" trades. Eight years later, in 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was established. By 1916, the company had more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S., with the first catalog printed and the introduction of the "Job-fitted" concept. During WWI, Weinbrenner became a significant supplier of boots to the U.S. Army.
In 1938, the company ventured into safety footwear production, which was followed by celebrating 50 successful years in business in 1942. Throughout WWII, Weinbrenner exclusively manufactured military footwear, including combat and dress styles. In 1943, the company workers united under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, fostering an enduring mutual respect with management.
The iconic Hike n' Camp boot, designed in 1964, became the best-selling boot in the company's history and remains in its original form today. In 1988, local investors, including six employees, acquired the company, leading to the creation of the “ThoroGard” division specializing in high-tech occupational safety footwear.
Weinbrenner marked its 100th anniversary in 1992, followed by an employee ownership transition through ESOP in 2000. The company displayed its commitment to social responsibility by donating durable work boots to Ground Zero within days of the September 11 attacks in 2001.
As Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2017, a renewed focus on upgrading domestic facilities and manufacturing methods was evident. By 2022, the company reached its 130th anniversary milestone, unveiling a new factory in Merrill, WI, and introducing the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continued to soar in 2023, with Thorogood expanding its range of styles.
The company's safety toe boots meet or exceed impact and compression testing standards, while also offering electrical hazard resistance and slip-resistance. Crafted from premium full-grain leather, Thorogood's boots are made in the USA with a Goodyear welt construction for superior durability. Featuring a removable shock-absorbing footbed and fiberglass shank construction, these American-made boots provide essential protection and comfort for individuals working in hazardous environments.
