In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with his partner, Joseph Peffer, catering to "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was officially formed. By 1916, the company had more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S., and the first catalog was printed.

In 1917, the "Job-fitted" concept was introduced, with Weinbrenner becoming a significant supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI. In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production. By 1942, during WWII, the company celebrated 50 years in business and focused on military footwear production, which also gained popularity among civilians.

In 1943, company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, maintaining a strong relationship with management through the years. In 1964, the iconic Boy Scout Boot, Hike n' Camp, was introduced, becoming the company's best-selling boot of all time.

In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division focusing on high-tech occupational safety footwear. By 1992, Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality." In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through ESOP.

In 2001, after the September 11 terror attacks, Weinbrenner donated durable work boots to Ground Zero. In 2014, the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots was introduced. By 2017, Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th Anniversary, showcasing a commitment to upgrading domestic facilities and manufacturing methods.

In 2022, Weinbrenner reached 130 years as a company, opening a new factory in Merrill, WI, and launching the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase as Thorogood gains popularity and expands with new styles on the horizon in 2023.
