In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed. By 1916, the company had more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S. and printed its first catalog. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI.
In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production. By 1942, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and converted to producing all-military footwear during WWII. In 1943, company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, establishing an outstanding relationship between management and workers that continues to this day.
The introduction of the Official Boy Scout Boot, the Hike n' Camp, in 1964 became the company's best-selling boot of all time. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division focused on high-tech safety footwear.
In 1992, Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality." Employees took ownership of the company through ESOP in 2000. In 2001, the company donated durable work boots to Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks.
The 1892 Heritage line was introduced in 2014, followed by the celebration of the company's 125th anniversary in 2017. In 2022, Weinbrenner expanded with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, WI, and the launch of the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continued to increase in 2023 as Thorogood gained popularity with many new styles.
The company's safety toe boots meet or exceed impact and compression testing standards. They are also electric hazard resistant, slip-resisting, and oil-resisting. Made with premium full-grain leather, American-made Thorogood boots are comfortable and durable, suitable for various industrial applications. Steel toe boots for men offer protection from impact and compression hazards while keeping the feet light and flexible. Thorogood's American Heritage Wellingtons are known for their comfort, safety features, and durability, making them ideal for tough jobs.
