In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner, along with his partner Joseph Peffer, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee to serve "Jobbing" trades. By 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was officially formed. In 1916, the company printed its first catalog and boasted more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S. The following year, the "Job-fitted" concept was introduced, and Weinbrenner became a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI.

In 1938, the company made its first foray into safety footwear production, and by 1942, they were celebrating 50 years in business. Throughout WWII, the company converted to producing all-military footwear, including combat and dress styles that became popular with civilians. In 1943, the company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, fostering an outstanding relationship between management and workers that continues to this day.

In 1964, the iconic Boy Scout Boot, the Hike n' Camp, was introduced and became the company's best-selling boot of all time. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division specializing in high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 1992, Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."

By the year 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP. In 2001, following the September 11 terror attacks, Weinbrenner donated durable work boots to Ground Zero for those working in the rubble. In 2014, the company introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots.

Fast forward to 2023, with Weinbrenner celebrating 130 years in business by opening a new factory in Merrill, WI, and launching their first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to soar as Thorogood gains popularity, with new styles on the horizon. The company's commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and comfort remains unwavering as they strive to provide job-fitted boots for various specialized professions.
