In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving "Jobbing" trades. By 1900, Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed and in 1916, the first catalog was printed, boasting more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, with Weinbrenner becoming a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI.
In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and by 1942, it had converted to producing all-military footwear for the duration of WWII, catering to both combat and dress styles. The year 1943 saw workers organizing under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, marking the start of an outstanding relationship between management and employees that continues to this day.
In 1964, the iconic Boy Scout Boot known as the Hike n' Camp was introduced, featuring a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching. Fast forward to 1988, when the company was purchased by a local group, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division specializing in high-tech occupational safety footwear. By 1992, Weinbrenner celebrated its centennial, highlighting "A Century of Lasting Quality."
The year 2000 marked a significant milestone as Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP. In 2001, the company made headlines by donating 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero within days of the September 11 terror attacks, followed by another 200 pairs. Fast forward to 2014, when the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots was introduced, built on the iconic No. 60 last.
2017 marked Weinbrenner's 125th Anniversary, emphasizing a commitment to upgrading domestic facilities, equipment, and manufacturing methods. As 2022 rolled around, Weinbrenner celebrated 130 years in business and opened a new factory in Merrill, WI. The launch of the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons, further solidified the brand's legacy.
Looking ahead to 2023, Thorogood continues to see increasing sales and popularity with the expansion of new styles on the horizon, showcasing the brand's unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and comfort.
